In the Flow · Stratus series, Black Obsidian carries the Water Element — not because of its colour, but because of what it is: volcanic glass, formed when lava cools so quickly that no crystal structure has time to grow. The absence of structure is the point. Its geological origin is volcanic — but the relevant quality is not where it came from. It is what that rapid cooling produced: no crystal architecture, no organised mineral structure. Where most stones carry their energy in their mineral architecture, obsidian carries its energy in the lack of one — a stillness that is not emptiness, but depth. It is in that structural absence that the Water Element resides. In Five Element tradition, Water governs depth, intuition, and the quiet that makes perception possible.

The Aztecs ground obsidian into mirrors. Not to see their reflection — to see what ordinary eyes could not.
